As hundreds of corporate heavy hitters go to bat for voting rights, another GOP alliance falters

Household names such as Amazon, Google, and Warren Buffett joined together with hundreds of other companies and CEOs to demonstrate a united front against "any discriminatory legislation" in a pro-democracy statement that ran as ads Wednesday in TheWashington Post and The New York Times.

The ad's banner read, "WE STAND FOR DEMOCRACY," with the subhead, "A Government of the people, by the people" centered directly underneath.

The show of solidarity was arranged by former American Express Chief Executive Kenneth Chenault and Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier, according to the Times. Frazier,a Black executive and the grandson of a man born into slavery, has been particularly outspoken about the GOP voter suppression efforts sweeping the nation. He told the Times the statement wasn't political, but was rather an affirmation of the bedrock principles of our democracy.

“These are not political issues,” Frazier said. “These are the issues that we were taught in civics.”
